Chandigarh records more than 200 cases for the fifth day in a row: The Tribune India

For the fifth day in a row, the city reported more than 200 Covid cases. Currently, 234 new cases have appeared in UT, bringing the count to 5,502.

UT DEO dies of Covid

District education officer Harbir Singh Anand (58) died of Covid at GMCH on Saturday. Anand had tested positive for the virus on Thursday and had opted for home isolation. On Friday night, his condition worsened and he was rushed to the GMCH. He was a resident of Nayagaon. His death is not counted in the Chandigarh Covid toll nor is it reflected in the Mohali toll.

A Covid death was also reported today, bringing the death toll to 69. A 27-year-old from Sector 14, who had type 2 diabetes, succumbed at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32.

Chandigarh has seen a significant increase in the number of Covid cases since the beginning of the month. The UT has reported more than 1,156 new cases and 13 deaths since September 1, compared to 219 cases and five deaths in the first five days of August.

Almost 39 percent of Covid cases in the city are active.

Members of the UT Teachers Joint Action Committee asked the Administration to establish a policy to provide financial assistance to employees who contracted the virus in service. Meanwhile, four more employees from the District Office of Education tested positive. The UT Department of Education has decided to screen the District Office of Education employees for Covid on Monday. – TNS
