NEW DELHI: India surpassed Brazil on Saturday as the country with the second-highest number of recorded Covid-19 cases after the United States. The pandemic continued its unprecedented rise in India, with new cases approaching 90,000 on Saturday, the fourth consecutive day of record daily increases in infections.

Brazil’s numbers may top India’s when their final Saturday count is added. But following recent trends, the number of cases from India is expected to separate from Brazil on Sunday.
India, which is currently in the midst of the highest Covid-19 spike seen in any country since the pandemic outbreak, has been recording nearly twice as many daily cases as Brazil and the United States in recent days. In the past 24 hours, 89,690 infections were recorded in the country, bringing the total number of cases to 41.05,930 per day after crossing the 40 lakh mark, according to data collected by TOI from state governments. This was the fourth peak in daily cases in the last four days.
The rise in infections was again led by Maharashtra, which reported as many as 20,489 new cases on Saturday, its highest count in a single day so far. Seven other states also reported their biggest daily jump in cases: Uttar Pradesh (6,692), Kerala (2,655), Haryana (2,289), J&K (1,251), Uttarakhand (950), Tripura (691) and Meghalaya (182).
The death toll from the virus nationwide on Saturday was 1,055, bringing the total to 70,606. This was the fifth consecutive day of more than 1,000 deaths. On average, there have been more than 1,000 deaths per day in the country during the last 10 days. Delhi continued to report a resurgence of the virus, with 2,973 new infections on Saturday, the highest count in 67 days. The increase in cases in Maharashtra and Mumbai continued with the state on Saturday crossing a grim new milestone of adding more than 20,000 cases in one day, its biggest addition in one day.
The state’s Covid case burden is now 8.83,862, accounting for 22% of India’s count. The only silver lining was that the state’s fatality rate fell below 3% (2.97%) on Saturday for the first time since March. Mumbai ‘s rally also continued as, for the fourth day in a row, it added 1,737 cases to bring its overall tally to 1.53,712.
