SRINAGAR: An Indian army soldier was martyred and two others were injured after Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire in the Nowgam sector of Jammu and Kashmir in Kupwara on Saturday (September 5, 2020).
“Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation (CFV) along the Line of Control in the Nowgam sector of Kupwara in the morning by firing mortars and other weapons,” said defense spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia.
Colonel Rajesh Kalia said one soldier died while two others were wounded. The injured jaws were evacuated to Base Hospital 92 and their condition is stable, Colonel Kalia added.
Srinagar-based Defense PRO said an adequate response was given to Pakistan for its aggression.
The soldier who achieved martyrdom was identified as Army gunner Bhupinder Singh of the 17th Brigade, Army sources previously said.
Pakistani troops fired medium-engine shells at Indian outposts in the LoC, the sources said.
Pakistan violated the ceasefire by firing small arms and heavy mortar shelling along LoC in the Shahpur, Kirni and Degwar sectors in Poonch around 5.30pm today, Army sources said.
Reports from these sectors in the LoC said that heavy shooting and shelling was still taking place on both sides. Residents of villages in Shahpur, Kirni and Degwar sectors were huddled inside their homes throughout the day as they prayed for their lives during the shelling.
Pakistan has violated the LoC ceasefire with impunity since the beginning of this year. At least 24 civilians have been killed and more than 100 injured in more than 2,730 violations of the LoC ceasefire by Pakistan so far in 2020.
