CHANDIGARH: The Sonipat district administration launched a massive contact tracing campaign after 75 workers at two popular restaurants in Murthal tested positive for Covid-19, authorities said Friday.
Murthal: 65 Sukhdev Dhaba employees test positive
Sonipat Deputy Commissioner Shyam Lal Punia said sampling work has also started at other restaurants.
Sixty-five workers at Amrik-Sukhdev dhaba and 10 at Garam Dharam dhaba tested positive for coronavirus, after which both restaurants were sealed off on Thursday pending further orders, he told the media.
Both restaurants are located in Sonipat’s Murthal and almost 50 km from Delhi.
Murthal is known for its restaurants that dot a stretch on both sides of the Ambala-Delhi National Highway. People are seen passing by the famous “parathas” and other delicacies.
The DC said that in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, all restaurants had already been instructed to keep a register to record the number of visitors and their contact details.
“On the basis of these, we are trying to contact as many people as possible who have eaten food in these two dhabas in the last few days,” he said.
Sonipat Medical Director Dr JS Punia said that most of those infected in Sukhdev dhaba were workers who had recently arrived from Bihar.
“They all live in a colony near dhaba and we are tracking and testing all their local contacts. Furthermore, we have also informed the health authorities in Bihar about this and since the infected people could have come into contact with many there as well, “the CMO told PTI by phone.
The health authorities of the Sonipat district appealed to those who have eaten food in these two popular restaurants in recent days to be attentive to the symptoms that may develop and to isolate themselves.
When asked how many people would have eaten food at these two restaurants, district health department officials said these two restaurants are quite popular, but that giving an estimate would be difficult at this stage.
The DC previously told PTI that the Sonipat district administration had been conducting a special campaign to sample restaurant workers and it was during this process that these cases were detected.
In light of the pandemic, he said the district administration continues to carry out routine checks at restaurants to make sure they are following all rules and guidelines.
Haryana on Thursday reported its highest peak in a single day of 1,881 coronavirus cases with 19 deaths. The Sonipat district reported 190 new cases of Covid-19, according to a bulletin from the state health department.
According to the bulletin, Sonipat, which has so far reported 4,747 cases with 41 deaths, is the third worst affected district after Faridabad and Gurugram.
