Facebook is ‘non-partisan’ and strives to ensure that its platforms remain a space where people freely express themselves, Facebook said in its response to the letter from the (organization) secretary general of Congress, KC Venugopal, accusing the platform of social networks of ‘interfering in the electoral democracy of India’.
“We are not partisan and we strive to ensure that our platforms remain a space where people can express themselves freely. We take accusations of prejudice seriously and denounce hatred and intolerance in all its forms, ”Neil Potts, Facebook’s Director of Trust and Safety, said in the letter.
“On the issue of hateful content by public figures, we want to assure you that our Community Standards prohibit attacks against people based on their protected characteristics, including religion, caste, ethnicity and national origin. In accordance with our hate speech policy, we have removed and will continue to remove hate content from public figures in India on our platforms, ”the letter added.
KC Venugopal had written to Zuckerberg referring to a Wall Street Journal report, which alleged that Facebook’s chief of policy in India, Ankhi Das, “gave the Bharatiya Janata Party favorable treatment on election-related matters.” In the letter, he demanded that a high-level investigation be conducted on Facebook India’s leadership team and its operations.
In its response, the social media giant also said it was grateful for the minister’s recommendations and would welcome the opportunity to interact with him and Congress on these matters.
