After more than five months, bus operation resumed in Tamil Nadu to a tepid response from passengers. Places of worship, parks, shopping malls, hotels and clubs also reopened on Tuesday. The buses were disinfected before being removed from the warehouses, while the drivers and drivers began to work after a temperature check. In several places, workers offered prayers and broke gourds, a common practice to ward off the evil eye, before hitting the roads.
Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar said only a few people used the services on the opening day and more buses would resume after seeing people’s response in the coming days. Out of the approximately 22,000 fleet force in state transportation corporations, 6,090 buses were operated today within the boundaries of each district. Services are open until 9 pm, he told reporters.

Shopping malls, hotels and clubs, which were also reopened, saw comparatively less patronage. The parks, however, came alive again with the return of the morning walkers and joggers. As a general preventive measure, the government said that cross ventilation should be encouraged in all places and that the temperature of air conditioners should be in the range of 24-30 degrees Celsius.
