With Lionel Messi set to leave Barcelona, Frenkie De Jong becomes one of the most important pieces of the team next season and a big part of the club’s hopes for a successful rebuilding.
De Jong is currently training with the Dutch national team ahead of the UEFA Nations League return, and a couple of different outlets asked him about Messi as expected. Frenkie says that he has not spoken to Messi at all, and that he does not think about it while on international duties.
“I have not talked to him about this. Not the club. So I honestly don’t know what it’s like. But if Messi really leaves, it will be a severe blow to the team and to the club. When I come back after these international matches, I’ll see what happened at the club.
“I didn’t call him. I think a lot of people want to hear from him. I don’t have such a good relationship with him that I call him and ask how he’s doing. “

Frenkie De Jong might be the most honest player on Barcelona’s squad, at least when it comes to dealing with the media. It seems to me that he will be sad because Messi is leaving, but he does not lose sleep over that. If the whole team has the same attitude and is eager to take on more responsibilities once the captain is gone, this rebuild could work after all.
