Sumit Nagal broke into the second round of the ongoing US Open on Tuesday. Nagal defeated Bradley Klahn of the United States 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the men’s singles first round at the US Open to advance further in the tournament. With this result, Nagal, 23, has become the first Indian man to win a main draw match at the US Open in 7 years. By 2013, Somdev Devvarman had reached the second round of the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Returning to Flushing Meadows, where he faced Roger Federer, Nagal shot out in the first two sets of the first round match against Klahn as he posted complete victories of 6-1, 6-3.

However, in the third set, Klahn came back to defeat Nagal and the match was set for an intense finale.

Nagal once again rose to the top in the fourth set and gained a 5-0 lead in the set. Klahn was able to win a game, but in the end, Nagal finished the match comprehensively.

Nagal, who is number 122 in the world, will now face Austrian Dominic Thiem, who led 7-6 (6) 6-3 in his first round match when his opponent Jaume Munar retired.
