Cumulative domestic sales in August 2020 saw year-on-year volume growth of around 20 percent as the market moves on a steady recovery path.
With the exception of Volkswagen India, all car manufacturers present in the country recorded a month-over-month sales increase in August 2020 and it is a clear indication of the progress shown by the Indian auto industry. At the top, Maruti Suzuki posted total sales of 1,24,624 units (1,15,325 PV nationally) last month and achieved appreciable year-on-year sales growth of 15.3 percent.
Compared to the previous month of July 2020, the country’s largest automaker posted an increase of 17.1 percent, with 97,768 units sold during that period. Hyundai registered a total of 45,809 units in August 2020 compared to 38,205 units during the same period in 2019 with year-on-year growth of 19.9 percent. It also exported 6,800 units, bringing the total to just over 56,000 units.
Tata Motors endured a healthy 24% monthly increase, but compared to August 2019, sales soared. Last month, the local automaker sold 18,583 units compared to 7,316 units with a massive 154 percent growth in volume. In fourth place, Mahindra had 13,651 units in August 2020 against 13,147 units with a year-on-year increase of 4 percent, while the month-on-month growth stood at 25 percent.

Kia Motors India remained strong in fifth position as Seltos and Carnival sales combined stood at 10,853 units versus 6,236 units with sales growth of 74%. The arrival of the Sonet compact SUV will help win more sales volume for the South Korean brand and its bookings have surpassed the 10,000 mark in no time.
It will compete against Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and others. Renault, Honda, Ford, Toyota and MG followed to complete the top ten. Renault recorded 8,060 units last month compared to 5,704 units during the same period in 2019 with growth of 41% year-on-year, while the month-on-month increase was 26%.
The recently launched fifth-generation City has helped Honda post good volumes last month, with 7,509 units sold versus 5,383 units in the prior month for a 39 percent increase. Toyota endured a 48% year-on-year decrease, as did Ford with -14%. MG, on the other hand, recorded 2,851 sales units with a year-on-year increase of 41 percent.
