Judge Arun Mishra has rejected the invitation of the Supreme Court Bar Association for a farewell ceremony.

Judge Arun Mishra, who is retiring from the Supreme Court tomorrow after more than six years, was relieved after ruling today in the last case he heard. “Shiv-ji ki kripa se ye aakhri judgment bhi ho gaya (The final judgment has been handed down, by the grace of Lord Shiva, ”Judge Mishra said after his bank issued a verdict issuing instructions on the management of the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain.
The ancient Madhya Pradesh temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the court had dealt with the issue of protecting the ‘Jyotirlingam’, the representation of Lord Shiva there.
Judge Mishra’s tenure in the high court has been peppered with some key verdicts, including the legality of the SC / ST Amendment Act and the contempt case against lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan.
This morning, Judge Mishra also ruled on the adjusted gross income (AGR) issue for telecommunications companies, allowing them a 10-year window of time to make payments.
The outgoing judge declined the invitation from the Supreme Court Bar Association for a farewell ceremony, citing the coronavirus outbreak.
Expressing his appreciation for the invitation, he wrote that considering “the dire situation and suffering around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my conscience does not allow me to participate in any farewell functions.”
However, he assured them that he will visit the bar to pay his respects when the situation improves.
The son of Madhya Pradesh High Court Judge HG Mishra, Judge Arun Mishra was elevated to the Calcutta High Court Supreme Court in July 2014.
He practiced constitutional, civil, industrial, service and criminal law and served as Chairman of the Council of Lawyers of India.
