NEW DELHI: Former bureaucrat Rajiv kumar On Tuesday, he took office as the new electoral commissioner.
He takes the place left vacant by Ashok Lavasa who joins the Asian Development Bank as vice president.
Kumar, a 1984 retired IAS officer from the Jharkhand cadre, will serve a five-year term and will retire in 2025.
He will preside over the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
According to the rules, an election commissioner has six years in office or until his 65th birthday, whichever comes first. Kumar was born in February 1960.
During the span of more than 36 years of service, Kumar has worked in various ministries in the Center and in his former Bihar state cadre and then Jharkhand.
Withdrew like the union Finance Secretary in February of this year and was appointed president of the Public Companies Selection Board (PESB) on April 29.
Despite the disruptions due to COVID-19, more than 40 selections were made in just a span of two months through the process of virtual and physical interviews during his short tenure at the public sector scout.
Kumar has also been Establishment Officer, Personnel and Training Department, and prior to that position Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Department with previous assignments in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Forests, as well as Department of Education in the box state.
