The schedule and modalities for conducting the exam for nearly 8 lakhs of students in the state will be declared two days after the vice chancellor’s committee finalizes its plan. The committee headed by VC Suhas Pednekar from the University of Mumbai is considering various options, Maharashtra Minister of Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant announced on Monday after a meeting with the committee.
After the Supreme Court held that states must adhere to the College Scholarship Commission’s guidelines and conduct examinations, the state government set up a six-member panel that presented its report on Monday.
Samant said that 11 of the 13 state universities in Maharashtra, including the University of Mumbai, requested an extension of the September 30 deadline set by the UGC to complete the examination process until October 31. The other two universities – Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati and Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nashik – sought an extension of the deadline until November 10.
The proposed extension of the term will be sent to the UGC for approval. While it required examinations, the higher court had allowed states to request an extension of the term.
Samant said Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will meet with the state disaster management authority and discuss the new exam schedule.
He said that although the state will conduct tests, no student will have to leave the house. “The committee is considering three options, namely, online mode, open-book exam, and assignments. We have asked VCs to select one option. We are firm in the position that students cannot be forced to come to the center. to conduct the exam. The panel members will meet tomorrow (Tuesday), and by Wednesday they should be ready with their exam schedule and plan for conducting the exams, “said the minister.
Senior exam assignments will be set to a lower number of grades to ease the burden on students. The impasse of the five-month exams ended on Friday with the Supreme Court ruling in favor of taking the exam.
