Pranab Mukherjee’s funeral took place today with full military honors. The former president, who had tested positive for coronavirus, died this Monday, weeks after his brain surgery. He was 84 years old.
Pranab Mukherjee’s body was brought to his official home in Delhi, 10 Rajaji Marg, for the people to pay their last respects.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited his residence and paid their last respects.
Pranab Mukherjee, the greatest statesman in Indian politics, died aged 84. The former president of India, who tested positive for coronavirus, had been in a coma after brain surgery earlier this month.
“With great regret, we inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away despite the best efforts of the RR Hospital doctors and the prayers, duas and prarthanas of people from all over India. I thank you all”, said his your son Abhijit Mukherjee.
The government has announced a seven-day state duel from August 31 to September 6.

On Tuesday, the Union Cabinet expressed its condolences and deep regret at the death of former President Pranab Mukherjee. The Cabinet was also silent for 2 minutes in his memory, according to the Ministry of the Interior (MHA).

Union Minister Smriti Irani shared a heartfelt post on Instagram in which she remembered former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who died at the age of 84 in a Delhi hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first to pay tribute and said it was a blessing to have Pranab Mukherjee’s leadership since he took office.
Pranab Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and underwent surgery the same day for the removal of a clot in the brain. He had tested positive for COVID-19 at the hospital. “On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID-19 today. I ask people who have been in contact with me in the last week to please self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19,” had posted.
