The new-generation Celerio’s camouflaged test mule was spied on a test drive recently, hinting that the updated car might launch this holiday season.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio was originally released in 2014, but the manufacturer only updated the hatchback once in 2017, which was also a mid-life update. While the Celerio continues to live without many updates, all of its rivals appear to be outperforming in terms of features and safety technology.
After nearly six years of being on sale, Maruti Suzuki is finally working to bring a next-gen model to the entry-level hatchback, with a launch expected this year. While the automaker hasn’t officially confirmed anything about the new-gen Celerio yet, here is a list of 5 things the new-gen model is expected to come equipped with:
1. Platform
The new generation Celerio has been internally codenamed ‘YNC’, and the new generation version of the popular hatch is expected to be based on the fifth generation version of Maruti’s lightweight Heartect platform. This will be the same Heartect K architecture that also supports the S-Presso.
2. Engines
Under the hood of the car there will likely be the same 1.0-liter three-cylinder K10B naturally aspirated gasoline engine that is offered with the current generation model. This engine produces 68 hp of maximum power, along with 90 Nm of maximum torque. Also on offer this time could be Maruti’s 1.2-liter NA petrol engine with an output of 83 PS / 113 Nm.
This is the same engine that currently also performs functions in the Swift and Wagon R. Given the current market trend, the automaker will likely also introduce a gasoline-CNG option for the next-generation Celerio. Transmission tasks are expected to be taken care of by a 5-speed manual gearbox, along with an optional automatic.
3. Design
Compared to the current Celerio, the next-gen model is expected to grow in size, giving it a more spacious cabin than the previous one. The next-gen Celerio will also feature a completely new design, as the current-gen version has started to look outdated.
4. Features
The current generation Celerio’s equipment list is quite slim and therefore the car seems to be out of date now given that rivals offer a lot more features. As of now, the Celerio’s feature list includes an integrated Bluetooth entertainment system, steering-mounted audio controls, driver’s seat height adjustment, power-adjustable exterior rearview mirrors, power windows, manual AC, etc.
However, the next second-generation Celerio will undoubtedly have better security features and technology. The top-end version of the next-generation model is expected to be offered with the latest version of Maruti Suzuki’s Smartplay Studio touchscreen infotainment system (7-inch unit) integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, front fog lights, Dual front airbags, a high speed alert system, ABS with EBD, front seat belt reminder, reverse parking sensors, and much more.
5. Launch and price
The current generation Suzuki Maruti is priced between Rs 4.41 – 5.68 lakh, however with all the changes, new features and powertrains implemented, the price of the next generation model will also increase.
The updated hatchback is expected to launch in the Indian market later this year, and could be priced from Rs 4.6 lakh onwards, going up to Rs 6 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).
