The contract, which has been in the works since 2017, will go to private sector companies L&T and Tata Aerospace and Defense. A significant part of the work will also go to the public sector company BEML, which supplies trucks for the rocket launchers.
The Pinaka program has been a local success story, with two regiments already in service. The transfer of technology to the private sector has been successfully executed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Of the six new regiments, L&T has been awarded the contract to manufacture four, while the other two will be manufactured by Tata Aerospace and Defense.
The Defense Ministry said that the regiments that have been ordered are: 114 launchers with an automated system for positioning and pointing weapons, 45 command posts and 330 vehicles.
“These Six Pinaka Regiments will be operational along the northern and eastern borders, further enhancing the operational readiness of our armed forces. The incorporation of the six Pinaka regiments is scheduled to be completed in 2024, ”said the Defense Ministry.
ET had reported in May that the Pinaka program had been identified as accelerated, both to boost private industry during the Covid-19 crisis and to use money saved from delays in the delivery of weapons systems that are currently being imported.
