The next round of the monthly seroprevalence survey in the national capital is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, with authorities preparing for the exercise to further analyze the COVID-19 situation in Delhi. The sources said the sample size this time is likely to be around 17,000. However, there was no official confirmation on its scale.

The latest seroprevalence survey was conducted from August 1-7, according to which antibodies against COVID-19 infection were found in 29.1 percent of the people surveyed in the national capital. Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendar Jain, announcing the results of the August survey earlier this month, had told reporters that 15,000 representative samples were taken from 11 districts and that the next exercise would start on September 1.

The minister had also said that the prevalence of antibodies found in men was 28.3% and 32.2% in women. The seroprevalence of antibodies found in age groups less than 18 years old was 34.7%, in those 18-50 years it was 28.5% and 31.2% in those aged 50 years and over. The sources said the September round of polls will take place over five days and is also likely to follow protocols similar to those of the previous exercise.

The exercise was conducted in the first week of August to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the COVID-19 situation in Delhi and formulate strategies based on its findings. The pre-August seroprevalence survey, conducted from June 27 to July 10 by the Delhi government in association with the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), had used 21,387 samples and found that around 23 per One hundred of the people surveyed had an exposure to the new coronavirus.

“The increase, rather than the exponential increase, is not there. So, people are apparently taking security precautions. But, we cannot afford to be complacent and lower our guard,” Jain had said on August 20. The national capital had seen an outbreak. in daily cases in recent days and constant increase in active cases since August 5.

Delhi registered 1,358 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the count in the city to more than 1.74 lakh, while the death toll from the disease rose to 4,444, authorities said. By Sunday, Delhi had recorded 2,024 new cases, the highest single-day peak in the city in August to date. It was also the highest streak in the last almost 50 days in Delhi.

On Saturday, the city reported 1,954 cases and in the previous two days, the city had registered more than 1,800 cases. The active COVID-19 case count on Monday was 14,626. About 15,000 samples were collected as part of the August exercise, covering different areas and age groups, gender and economic class, he said.

Of the total number of samples, 25% were taken from the age group under 18 years, another 50% from the age group 18 to 49 years, and the remaining 25% from the age group 50 years and over. The seroprevalence found in the northeast district was 29 percent, the southern district 27 percent, the southeast 33 percent and New Delhi 24 percent, Jain said.

Jain had announced on July 22 that after analyzing the results of the June-July survey, it was decided that each month more exercises of this type would be carried out to formulate better policies to face the COVID-19 situation in the national capital.
