NEW DELHI: On a day when military tensions between India and China rose again in eastern Ladakh, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said it is critical that both countries soon reach an agreement for the peaceful conduct of bilateral relations.
Addressing the United States-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), Jaishankar said that India has been “aware” of the rise of China and is affected by it as an immediate neighbor. “But India has also been increasing, and that is equally important to remember,” he said. When asked about the Pakistan-China nexus, the minister said that India took it into account when formulating the policy.
In recent weeks, as the fight to pull the Indian economy out of the slowdown begins, both Prime Minister Modi and Jaishankar have been trying to entice global industry to increase investment in India.
In response to inquiries from US companies about the import embargoes recently announced by the Indian government on 100 items, the minister said: “We expect these products to be manufactured in India. Invest in defense manufacturing in India. The Indian policy of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” is about increasing our national capabilities. ”
He stressed that the path of economic recovery after Covid will be “focused on improving the ease of doing business.”
On Indo-American relations, Jaishankar said: “Today we have a level of political trust that we did not have before.”
