No end in sight at the end of August

Hyderabad: The Telangana health department forecast that Covid-19 would be under control in Hyderabad by the end of August has been relentlessly contradicted in new cases in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area. Another 461 people were added to the list of cases in the city alone, while 1,873 cases were added to the state as a whole.

Earlier this month, senior health department officials had told a press conference that Covid-19 cases would start to see a drop in late August in the city and late September in the rest of the state.

The latest figures from Monday morning show that new infections are being detected at a rate of 2.6 per week, and the latest testing rate has risen to 36,000 per 1 million.

Previous forecasts in April that the end of Covid-19 was near in Telangana had also fallen by the wayside, as the disease only grew stronger and spread to rural areas as well.

Nine more people lost their lives to the disease in the Monday morning bulletin, with a fatality rate of 0.7% and the proportion of active cases 25%.

While the Monday morning newsletter did not release the district data, the prevalence of the virus has been markedly higher in the district adjacent to the state capital, with Ranga Reddy in second place with 213 new cases.
