In a further escalation of the ongoing military confrontation between India and China in eastern Ladakh, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army carried out “provocative military moves” to “unilaterally” change the status quo on the southern shore of Pangong. Tso, but the attempt was thwarted by the Indian troops.

According to the officials, Indian intelligence agencies had picked up the noise of the Chinese movement towards the South Bank of Pangong Tso in Ladakh and the troops moved to occupy the places the Chinese wanted to enter to change the ground situation from the pre-consensus consensus. that arrived during the army. and diplomatic commitments.

One officer said there was no violent confrontation as such between rival troops and therefore no question of injuries or casualties, denying the first reports of injuries on both sides. By defending themselves against the Chinese move to the Southern Bank, the troops, he said, have prevented what happened at the Northern Bank, where Chinese soldiers have “entered” territory that India perceives as its own.

Chinese troops had physically occupied a nearly 8km stretch of what India considers its territory on the north shore of Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh after clashes in May and also created massive cartels in the area to claim it as Chinese land. . PLA soldiers had built dozens of fortifications, prefabricated huts, bunkers and pillboxes after occupying the ‘Finger-4 to 8’ area on the north bank of Pangong Tso in a massive consolidation since early May. India says that LAC is in Finger 8 and soldiers have been patrolling for a long time from west to east to this point.

A brigade commander-level flag meeting is currently taking place in Chushul to resolve issues arising from the new incident, Army spokesman Col. Aman Anand.

In a statement issued earlier that day, Colonel Anand said that PLA troops violated the previous consensus on the night of August 29-30 and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo. “Indian troops anticipated this PLA activity on the southern shore of Pangong Tso Lake, took steps to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change the facts on the ground,” the army spokesman said.

It is the first major incident involving troops from the two countries after the clashes in the Galwan Valley on June 15 in which 20 members of the Indian army were killed. China also suffered casualties, but the details have not yet been made public, but according to a US intelligence report there were 35.

India and China have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks in the past two and a half months, but no significant progress has been made towards a resolution of the border row in eastern Ladakh. The two sides began a disengagement process on July 6, a day after a telephone conversation between national security adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on ways to reduce tensions in the east. of Ladakh. However, the process has not advanced since mid-July.

The PLA has withdrawn from the Galwan Valley and some other sticking points, but troop withdrawal has not advanced in Pangong Tso, Depsang and a couple of other areas. In the five rounds of Corps commander level talks, the Indian side has been insisting on the complete disengagement of Chinese troops at the earliest and immediate restoration of the status quo ante in all areas of eastern Ladakh before April.
