Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi released the first part of his video series on Monday attacking the Modi government over the “economic tragedy facing the country for the first time in 40 years.”
He launched an attack on the Center saying that “asatyagrahi” (someone who has no interest in seeking the truth) is blaming God for the consequences. His tweet was an apparent contradiction to the statement by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last week, where he referred to the coronavirus pandemic as an ‘act of God’ that may result in a contraction of the economy this fiscal year. .
In a series of videos entitled ‘Arthavyavastha ki baat Rahul Gandhi ke saath’ or ‘State of the economy with Rahul Gandhi’, the leader of Congress claimed that the BJP government has attacked the informal structure of the economy and tried to convert the people into slaves.
“In 2008, the world was hit by an economic storm. It affected everyone, including the United States, China, Europe, and Japan. Many banks and companies in the United States and Europe closed, but India was not affected under the leadership of the UPA government, “Gandhi said.
He said that he asked the former prime minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, how India did not suffer losses like the rest of the world due to the recession and they told him that there were two types of economies within the country: organized and unorganized.
Gandhi says Singh explained to him that as long as the nation’s disorganized sector, which includes farmers, small and medium-sized enterprises and workers, remains strong, no economic storm will be able to defeat India.
“For the past six years, the BJP government has been attacking the informal sector,” he said, stating that demonetization, the “wrong” goods and services tax (GST), and the closure of Covid-19 were the biggest examples of the same.
“The closure was not planned at the last minute, but the objective of these three movements (demonetization, GST and closure) was to destroy the informal sector.
Up to 40 million people working in the informal sector can face extreme poverty, he said, citing a report from the International Labor Organization. At least two million people have lost their jobs in the past four months, he added.
He claimed that the informal sector has a lot of money that the government cannot touch and that is why they are trying to break up the sector to extort money. “The result will be that India will not be able to generate jobs as the informal sector generates more than 90% of the jobs. Unemployment will be the highest in 45 years, ”he said.
He stated that the government is deceiving the people and that is why the country needs to be united to fight this.
