The Jharkhand government released BJP deputy Sakshi Maharaj on Sunday within 24 hours of his home quarantine for allegedly violating COVID-19 protocols, authorities said. The deputy from the Unnao headquarters in Uttar Pradesh was “forcibly” placed in a 14-day home quarantine at Shanti Bhavan Ashram for allegedly failing to intimidate the state administration about his arrival in the district to participate in a program.

The state government had “been under pressure” to release him from home quarantine, official sources said. “The deputy tested negative for COVID-19 on Saturday. He was released from quarantine according to the orders of the state government. He is free to go wherever he wants,” Giridih Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar Sinha said. Maharaj left Giridih for Dhanbad to catch a train to New Delhi.

“Several politicians are prejudiced. Yesterday, the administration had detained me, so I stayed behind. Now they have allowed me to go, so I am leaving,” he said. On Saturday, the administration sealed the district’s borders and set up barricades after learning that Maharaj had unannounced Giridih and was leaving.

A team led by Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) Prerna Dixit followed the MP and detained him at a barricade in the area of the Pirtand police station before placing him in home quarantine. Maharaj had said that he had come to meet his ailing 97-year-old mother and claimed that he had informed the chief secretary about it.

The general secretary had rejected the MP’s request to visit Giridih, but had not informed him or the district administration, official sources said. “If the administration had rejected Maharaj’s request, it should have informed him. Such behavior with a parliamentarian is unjustified. The state government realized his mistake and released him. Otherwise, the BJP was planning to launch an agitation,” he claimed the president of the BJP, Deepak. Prakash said.
