As of now, there are two theories about Suresh Raina’s sudden departure from the 2020 Indian Premier League. At a time when the Chennai Super Kings are in the midst of the COVID-19 scare with 13 staff members including two players With the dreaded virus, the franchise struck another major blow when Raina chose to leave Dubai for India citing “personal reasons”. And while his teammate Shane Watson could have sent a heartfelt message to the veteran Indian cricketer calling him the team’s “heartbeat”, management could look beyond Raina at IPL 2020.
One theory suggests the murder of his relative by thieves in a village in Punjab’s Pathankot on Aug. 20, PTI had reported that early Friday that ongoing fears of COVID-19 had prompted him to return home.
But on Saturday, Outlook reported that a break in the hotel room could have been the reason behind Raina’s departure. The report added that Raina was unhappy with the room assigned to him at the hotel when CSK landed in Dubai on August 21. Finding claustrophobic in the BCCI SOP, Raina searched for a room similar to MS Dhoni, with a balcony. The captain failed to pacify her deputy.
CSK owner and former BCCI president N Srinivasan, speaking to Outlook, admitted that Raina’s departure was shocking and called him “prima donna.”
“Cricketers are like prima donnas … like temperamental actors from the old days. Chennai Super Kings have always been like a family and all the older players have learned to coexist,” Srinivasan said.
“My thought is that if you’re reluctant or unhappy, come back. I don’t force anyone to do anything … sometimes success gets into your head,” Srinivasan added.
However, he added that Dhoni had control over the situation after Raina’s departure and even asked his companions to remain safe.
“I spoke to MS (Dhoni) and he has assured me that even if the numbers go up, there is nothing to worry about. He spoke to the players via a zoom call and asked them to stay safe. You really don’t know who a passive carrier, “Srinivasan said.
“I have a solid captain. Dhoni just isn’t fazed by anything. That gives everyone on the team a lot of confidence,” Srinivasan said.
The two players who tested positive are Deepak Chahar and hitter Rituraj Gaikwad.
