Bangalore sees an increase in COVID-19 cases as people continue to skip quarantine at home

Karnataka recorded 8,960 Covid cases on Friday, bringing the state’s positive case count to 3,18,752. Of the total positive cases, Bengaluru recorded the highest number of positive cases with 2,721, bringing the total count for the state capital to 1,21,449. Mysuru and Ballari have witnessed a large increase in the case with 726 and 484 Covid positives respectively.

The increase in cases is attributed to violations committed by people subjected to home isolation.

In the Mahadevapura area alone, a volunteer told the Deccan Chronicle that on average 200 people jump home in quarantine. The BBMP contact tracing team takes note of the travel history and contacts of COVID-19 positive patients and then the home quarantine team applies home quarantine.

“We have registered more than 60 complaints with the police. In one case, a patient who was supposedly in home quarantine took a bicycle and challenged us to stop. Out of 100 such cases, we will meet nine people who are abusive.” said a volunteer on condition of anonymity.

Sometimes we call the police to deal with residents harassing volunteers. “The problem is that even the police cannot take any action against them. They are equally defenseless. They are even vulnerable. All they do is make the person re-examine,” said the volunteer.

N Manjula, Zone Commissioner, Mahadevapura Area, said that of the many who are in home quarantine, some are rude.

“If a person tests positive, the medical officer knows and reports the positive cases on call and directs them to the next course of action, which includes isolation at home or hospital. Sometimes people don’t answer calls and then we have to make a physical visit to the homes, ”he said.
