'Red' Heat Wave Alert For Most Of The Northern States Of India, You Can Touch 48 Degrees

The temperature is likely to range between 46-48 degrees Celsius in all of the core of the heat wave of the states least UNTIL

New Delhi:

The day temperature in Delhi is likely to touch 46 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the Meteorological Department of India (IMD), said, warning that a heat wave was going to dominate most of the northern states of India, parts of Maharashtra and Telangana this week.

The relief is only expected after the May 28, as a western disturbance is likely to bring light rain, scientist Naresh Kumar with IMD’s National Weather Forecasting Centre told the news agency PTI.

“Heat wave in some parts, with severe heat wave in more isolated pockets, it is very likely that most of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Telnagana in the next five days,” IMD’s daily bulletin said Sunday.

The temperature is likely to range between 46-48 degrees Celsius in all of the core of the heat wave of the state except Uttar Pradesh.

This is the first “network” alert for the heat wave this summer, Mr Srivastava said. The IMD issues colour-coded warnings depending on the intensity of any weather system in ascending order – green, yellow, orange and red.

“The alert has been issued to caution people not to go out between 1pm and 5pm, when the heat is more intense,” IMD of the head of the Regional Meteorological Centre Kuldeep Srivastava, said.

The heat wave warning comes at a time when lakhs of migrant workers are walking back to their states of origin in the middle of the Coronavirus lock and several were seen crossing the river Yamuna in new Delhi by the night to escape the heat during the day.

Earlier in February, the IMD had warned that for the second year in a row this summer (March-May) would be warmer than normal by an average of more than 1 degree Celsius.

In 2019, India witnessed 73 heat waves across 23 states with the mercury, the increase of up to 50 degrees Celsius, killing dozens of people, the data that is shared by the National Disaster Management Authority showed.

Bags isolated over Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Gujarat, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalseema and north interior Karnataka, are also likely to experience the heatwave conditions until the mid of this week.
