After much speculation, the residents realized that it was not a thing. The mysterious booms have been heard in Bengaluru earlier as well. A similar incident took place in August 2018, when residents in several South Bengaluru neighbourhoods had heard a noise boom with many reporting that their windows shook. The panic was such that in the State disaster management officials has come through and assure the people that there was an earthquake.
But while the incident may be maintained nearly identical, the source of the plume of sound is yet to be determined. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), however, determined that even in this case, there was no earthquake.
As for the KSNDMC director’s statement, there are 18 seismic monitors to analyze the tectonics of activities in case of earthquakes, and noe of them registered seismic activity.
But that did not stop netizens from cooking up some of the more bizarre theories to explain the sound. The thundering sound, which is now being referred to by internet users and Bengaluru residents, and a “sonic boom”, has inspired many jokes and conspiracy theories, including alien invasion and worse.
Speculation was rife.
