Nepal has officially unveiled a new political map of the country showing the regions of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh in Uttarakhand, as part of its sovereign territory.
The launch of the map in a press conference, the Minister of Land Management of Padma Kumari Aryal said that the government of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli is committed to protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
“It is an historic moment of happiness for the people of Nepal. The government will not allow the erosion of the self-esteem of our people. Nepal will publish the new map and make a part of the school text books”, said ms. Aryal.
Political map of Nepal published by the country on 20 May 2020.
The area of Susta near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, also seems to be part of Nepal in the new map. Kathmandu says that India has invaded this area, claiming large tracts of land and wants to Delhi to evacuate the population of the region.
Road problem
The publication of the new map came less than two weeks after India announced the construction of a road to the Lipulekh pass, which will reduce the travel time to the Tibet Manasarovar pilgrimage center. Nepal had reacted angrily, claiming that the area belongs to the Kathmandu and the Lord Oli said that his government was prepared to take a journey to Tibet on lease to India without giving up the region.
“We hope to begin diplomatic negotiations with the friendly nation of India with respect to territorial claims”, Ms Aryal, said Wednesday.
Following the Indian action, there were reports of anti-India protests in some parts of Nepal and the Lord Oli-directed to India by the alleged regional hegemony. “The India of the pillar of Ashoka has the lions with the “Truth will prevail”, inscribed on the bottom. That actually means “Lion [might] will prevail. But Nepal is true that the truth will prevail,” he said before the Parliament on Tuesday. He also alleged that India was responsible for the spread of the Coronavirus in the country of the Himalayas.
India map
The current phase of the tension can be traced to the announcement of a new political map of India, last year, that showed the newly created Union of the Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. It also demonstrated that the region of Kalapani as part of the Indian territory.
Nepal holds that not only the Kalapani region, but the Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh are parts of their sovereign territory as demarcated in the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. Says Lipulekh has been removed from the country on the map by their kings to gain favors from India in exchange.
Analysts in Kathmandu have said that the new map is actually a document that was in circulation in the country until the 1950s. They claim that the territory of Kalapani was given to India by King Mahendra after the 1962 India-China war.
Nepal also expressed their discomfort for the 2015 agreement between India and China for the use of the Lipulekh pass to the trade without talking.
China, Mr. Oli stated before the Parliament this week, however, had been transmitted to Kathmandu that the pact with India was on the trade and pilgrimage, and not to grant Chinese seal of approval to the Indian territory.
In a speech to the Parliament, the President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had stated that the new map. The decision was cleared at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday and released on Wednesday.
