The proposal to name an Indian candidate as the new head of the WHO Executive Board was reportedly signed by the 194-nation World Health Assembly on Tuesday.
In particular, Harsh Vardhan assumes the crucial position is nothing more than a formality, since in 2019 it was decided that the Indian candidate would be elected to the executive council for a period of three years in May 2020. The office of president of the WHO Executive Board is held in rotation for one year among regional groups.
It should be noted that the chariman position is not a full-time assignment and Harsh Vardhan will only chair the Executive Board meetings. The 34 members of the executive board are highly qualified people in the health field. Each member of the executive board is appointed by a member state elected to do so by the World Health Assembly.
The election of the member states is for three years and the Board meets at least twice a year. The Executive Board finalizes the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly and helps facilitate its work.
Harsh Vardhan addressed the 73rd World Health Assembly via video conference on Monday (May 18) and said that India took all necessary steps ahead of time to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
