Assam Prime Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Friday that he has written to the Center about extending the blockade two more weeks after May 17.
Sonowal addressed a press conference on Friday where he gave details on the situation of Covid-19 in Assam and what his government is doing to deal with the crisis.
Sonowal said at the press conference that all states were supposed to give their opinion on the extension of the blockade by Friday, and that the Assam government has already conveyed its position to the Center.
“Let the Indian government take an opinion on this. I don’t want to say much about this now. All states have written to the Center, which will make a decision on the extension, “he added.
With 22 new cases detected in Guwahati in 24 hours, the authorities in Assam are on alert and anxiety exists among residents of the state and the largest city in the northeast.
While 15 people were found positive on Wednesday, another 7 new cases were reported on Thursday, bringing the total number of patients in the state to 87. While two patients died, 41 recovered, 43 are in treatment, and one patient has migrated to Bihar
In light of the outbreak in cases, nine areas in Guwahati have been converted into containment areas.
Assam on Thursday launched a new set of standard operating procedures to be followed when dealing with passengers returning to the state from other parts of the country on trains.
The procedures list how passengers will be treated once they enter Assam and get off at various stations. Officials have been asked to follow transportation, screening, testing and quarantine rules for passengers.
Since the resumption of the interstate movement on May 4, more than 11,000 people have returned by road from across the country and other northeastern states to Assam. Eighteen of them have been positive for Covid-19 to date.
About 500 passengers arrived at various locations in Assam on Wednesday and Thursday on the first train that brought residents of Delhi. Two more trains, one from Delhi and the other from Chennai, with more than 800 passengers will arrive in the state on Thursday night.
