The monsoon is likely to take 4 days to reach Kerala on June 5: Department of Meteorology

The start of Monsoon in Kerala will be delayed by 4 days. Will arrive before June 5 instead of June 1

New Delhi:

The southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on June 5, a delay of four days compared to its normal start date, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Friday.

The beginning of the monsoon over Kerala marks the beginning of the four-month rainy season from June to September.

According to the normal start date, the monsoon reaches Kerala on June 1.

“The start of the southwest monsoon over Kerala this year will probably be slightly delayed compared to the normal start date. The start of the monsoon over Kerala this year is likely to be June 5 with a model error of about 4 days.” said the IMD.

The monsoon is likely to hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 16, six days before its new start date of May 22 due to a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal.

Even last year, the monsoon had reached the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago on May 18, two days before its normal start date of May 20. But due to his slow pace, he arrived in Kerala on June 8. It covered the entire country by July 19.

According to the IMD forecast, the monsoon is likely to be normal this year.

The country receives 75 percent of its monsoon precipitation from the southwest during June to September. It is not only crucial for agriculture in the country, but also for replenishing reservoirs and, most importantly, for the economy that is still highly dependent on agriculture.

The northeast monsoon is another phenomenon that brings rain to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, parts of Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh from October to December.

Starting this year, the IMD has also revised the monsoon start and withdrawal dates for various parts of the country based on data from 1960 to 2019. Earlier dates were based on data from 1901 to 1940.

However, the monsoon start date over Kerala, which is June 1, remains unchanged.

In states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon will be delayed by 3 to 7 days compared to existing normal dates.

For the national capital, the new normal monsoon start date has been revised from June 23 to 27, a delay of four days. Similarly, the dates have been revised for Mumbai and Kolkata from June 10 to 11, and for Chennai from June 1 to 4.

However, in the far northwest of India, the monsoon will arrive a little earlier, on July 8, compared to the current date of July 15. The new date for the withdrawal of the monsoons from South India is October 15.
