Mumbai The Maharashtra government has decided to extend the blockade in critical areas such as Mumbai, Pune, Malegaon, Aurangabad and Solapur until May 31.

On Thursday, the state government had expressed its intention to extend the blockade at critical points until the end of the month. The possibility of extending the blockade was discussed at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

“In the rest of the state, the Center’s guidelines will be implemented when announced before the close of 3.0 closes on May 17,” a state government official said Thursday, quoted by the PTI news agency.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Minister of Water Resources Jayant Patil, Minister of Urban Development Eknath Shinde, Minister of Industries Subhash Desai, Minister of Revenue Balasaheb Thorat and PCD Minister Ashok Chavan.

As of Wednesday night, the coronavirus count in Maharashtra was 25,922. So far, 975 people have lost their lives due to the deadly virus of Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, which represents 15,747 cases and 596 deaths.

The COVID-19 blockade was first implemented on March 24 and extended twice, on April 14 and May 4. On Tuesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the 4.0 blockade, which can continue after May 17, will be different from the three phases implemented so far.

The ongoing blockade, which was extended by the Union Ministry of the Interior on May 4, ends on May 17. Prime Minister Modi, who had held marathon meetings with the chief ministers on Monday, had sought the opinion of the states on the extension of the blockade. Detailed guidance on the rules for blocking 4.0 is expected by May 16.
