Panaji: Within days of being declared free of coronavirus disease, Goa confirmed Thursday that seven people tested positive for COVID-19 during a rapid test. Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the seven patients were transferred to the designated COVID-19 hospital in Ponda.
The test was confirmed by a virology laboratory at Goa Medical College and Hospital.
The Union government had declared Goa a Green Zone since the state had not reported a single case of active coronavirus since May 1.
Goa Prime Minister Pramod Sawant, in a nightly statement, said the seven cases were “imported.” He added that six of them were from the Goan family of origin and had traveled to Goa from Mumbai.
The CM further said that the family was quarantined immediately after their arrival in Goa. They had not come into contact with anyone during their stay in the coastal state, Sawant added.
The seventh person, who tested positive for COVID-19 in the rapid test, is a trucker, who had entered Goa from Gujarat on Tuesday.
“We have quarantined all the people I had come into contact with,” Sawant said.
“All of these seven cases are imported from other states. They are not from Goa,” said the chief minister, urging locals to take all precautions and strictly obey the closing rules. He stated that there was no fear of community transmission in the coastal state.
All state participants are required to undergo screening and swab tests following the pandemic.
Goa was declared a Green Zone on May 1 after the seven patients, who were found infected in the state, recovered.
Subsequently, the Goa government allowed the resumption of most economic activities.
