A total of 129 people have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in clashes between two communities in Telinipara in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, the state Department of the Interior said Thursday.

He also said that some people were “trying to spread the communal virus to promote their political interests.”

“Crackdown has been taken against criminals in Telinipara, Hooghly. 129 people have been arrested so far and more will be arrested. Senior officers along with a large number of forces patrol the area throughout the day,” the Interior Department tweeted.

Noting that the administration is committed to ensuring peace, he said that “some people are trying to spread the communal virus to promote their political interests. Firm legal measures are being taken against all of these people.”

The fighting had erupted in Telinipara on Sunday after members of a community were allegedly mocked as “crown” by some people who belonged to another group.

Several stores were looted during a clash between two groups in the Victoria Jute Mill area of ​​Telinipara on Sunday night.

The two groups also dropped bombs on each other and set the stores on fire Monday morning.

Internet services have been suspended in the area since Tuesday night and the suspension will continue until the afternoon of May 17.

Section 144 CrPC was also imposed in Telinipara and its adjacent areas and the inspector in charge of the local police station was removed for not controlling the situation, the sources said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that no one involved in the fighting will be spared and that severe measures will be taken against criminals.
