Hyderabad The opposition Congress and BJP held protests on Wednesday against the alleged failure of the TRS government to halt an irrigation project that it reportedly proposed that neighboring Andhra Pradesh resume on the Krishna River.

President of the State Congress and Lok Sabha member N Uttam Kumar Reddy and other party leaders sat in on a protest at the party headquarters here.

Addressing the meeting, Reddy claimed that raising water from the Srisailam project, a joint irrigation project in the two neighboring states, as proposed by Andhra Pradesh, would adversely affect the water supply for the drinking water and irrigation needs in Mahabubnagar and other districts of Telangana.

He claimed that Prime Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is said to have a regular conversation with his AP Y S counterpart Jagan Mohan Reddy, should clarify the matter.

The president and deputy of the state BJP, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, also held a protest at his party’s office in the city protesting the supposed failure of the TRS government to stop the increase in the capacity of the main regulator that is supposed to extract the Krishna river water.

Former BJP MLA NVSS Prabhakar and other party leaders also held protests in different parts of the state.

The State Transport Minister, P Ajay Kumar, stated that the TRS government would not leave any stone unturned to safeguard the interests of the state.

In an apparent reference to congressional leaders, he alleged that those who had praised the increased capacity of the main regulator in Andhra Pradesh are now organizing protests.

The Telangana government, which has expressed its opposition to the proposed project, on Tuesday sent a representation to the Krishna River Administration Board (KRMB) broadcasting its opposition. “We have made a representation explaining our position on the project,” a senior official told PTI.

Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao alleged on Monday that the AP government “unilaterally decided” to take on the project that reportedly calls for the removal of water from the Krishna river from the Srisailam project, a joint irrigation scheme by the two neighbors , and said it would affect the interest of his state.

According to an official statement, Rao has said that the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Law clearly stipulates that any new project, be it in AP or Telangana, requires the approval of the main committee of the two states.

Therefore, the decision to use water from the Srisalam project without consulting Telangana and undertaking a new project without the approval of the apex committee were mistakes made by AP, he argued and asked officials to file a complaint with the Management Board of the Krishna River water.

According to the statement, Andhra Pradesh decided to retake the new project, proposing to withdraw three TMC waters from the Srisailam project and issued a Government Order (GO).
