New Delhi:
Rs 3.1 billion from the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Emergency Relief Fund or the PM-CARES Fund will be allocated to counter the coronavirus crisis, the government announced Wednesday.
“From Rs 3.1 billion rupees, an amount of approximately Rs 2 billion rupees will go towards the purchase of fans, Rs 1 billion rupees will be used for the care of migrant workers and Rs 100 million rupees to support the development of the vaccine, “said Prime Minister Narendra. Modi’s office said in a statement.
The PM CARES Fund, formed by the cabinet on March 27, is managed by a trust with PM Modi as its president and the main cabinet members as trustees.
The fund, which accepts tax-free donations from individuals and businesses, has received several high-profile contributions from almost all major industry groups, movie stars, and government departments.
Since the coronavirus outbreak, there have been several appeals from the Prime Minister, corporations, and prominent public figures to contribute to the fund. Employees of state-owned companies have also been urged to donate to the fund.
However, opposition parties have raised questions about the need for the Fund when the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has already existed since 1948.
Several senior ministers have also raised questions and concerns about the PM CARES fund’s preference over its state aid funds.
Amid growing questions about transparency, the government has said the fund will be audited by “independent auditors who will be appointed by administrators.”
