An attorney has filed an application against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, accusing him of misleading the Supreme Court.

Attorney Reepak Kansal asked the high court to order perjury proceedings against Mr. Goswami for providing “misleading information” in his plea to vacate the FIRs registered against him for spreading hatred in connection with his coverage of the Palghar lynching incident. Goswami has firmly denied the charges and called them “politically motivated”.

On April 25, the Supreme Court granted him provisional protection against arrest and transferred the case from Nagpur to Mumbai. Goswami has already accused the Mumbai police of bias in their investigation.

The police, in turn, accused Mr. Goswami of trying to intimidate investigative officers.

The case is scheduled for hearing on May 11 before a bank led by Judge D.Y. Chandrachud.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kansal argued that broadcast employees and television presenters do not respond to the description of a “publisher” in the Book Press and Registration Act and the Work Journalists Act.
