The Ministry of Railways has modified the indicators for the private “Shramik” trains, which transport migrant workers from various states along the Covid-19 closure.
The ministry has also decided to expand the capacity of those particular trains from the current 1,200 to more than 1,700. The revised indicators establish that the capacity of these trains must be equal to the variety of sleeping bunks.
Additionally, these trains can now have up to three stops (excluding the termination station).
The ministry has made an additional appeal to all states, particularly those that have allowed only a few trains, to present approvals liberally. The issue was brought up at the Minister of the Interior’s meeting with the states on Sunday and he wrote them a letter.
Interior Minister Amit Shah appealed to West Bengal, in particular, which has a very low number.
In their letter, the Interior Ministry, Ajay Bhalla, mentioned that each of the union’s states and territories should cooperate with the railways to work additional special “Shramik” trains for migrant personnel.
In addition, it called on the states and territories of the Union to ensure that migrant personnel do not resort to walking on roads, railways and using private trains.
Indian railways have operated 428 “Shramik” private trains since May 1 and transported more than 4.5 lakh migrants stranded in various parts of the nation amid the coronavirus-induced blockade, officials said Sunday.
As of May 9, of the 287 trains that had finished, 127 ended in Uttar Pradesh, 87 in Bihar, 24 in Madhya Pradesh, 20 in Odisha, 16 in Jharkhand, 4 in Rajasthan, three in Maharashtra, two in Telangana and West Bengal, and one in Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, mentioned additional officers.
