The official noted that families as a whole have tested positive in some areas of northern Chennai.

“Every person should be an anti-COVID-19 soldier and make a point to wear the mask without fail, like the way we wear underwear without fail,” he said, adding that during inspections they found that about 30 percent The people here don’t cover their faces.

Also emphasizing frequent hand washing, Radhakrishnan said authorities were encouraging the use of umbrellas to ensure social distancing in public spaces.

While 135 people were discharged today after recovering from various hospitals in the State, the total number of people who have overcome the illness caused by the virus was 1,959.

In addition, there were a number of children younger than 12 years old among the newly infected, including a one-year-old girl.

A 55-year-old man and a 59-year-old man, both admitted to government medical schools here, and a 74-year-old man who received treatment at the nearby Chengelpet government hospital, succumbed to COVID-19.

The duo treated here had comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, and deaths have brought COVID-19 deaths to 47 in Tamil Nadu.

Of the 669 infected, 412 were male and 257 female and were contacts.

In total, 7,204 people have been infected in the state to date, according to the bulletin.

Chennai represented 509 of the more than 600 new coronavirus cases, and a total of 3,839 people have been infected in the state capital alone.

Along with Chennai, the districts of Tiruvallur (337), Chengelpet (267) and Kancheepuram (122) which join the state capital in addition to Cuddalore (395) and Villupuram (299) also in the north of Tamil Nadu represent a huge 73 percent (approximately three-quarters) of the total of 7,204 cases in the State.

The central Tamil Nadu districts of Ariyalur and Perambalur have 275 and 104 cases respectively.

The southern districts of Tamil Nadu, such as Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli, have 24 and 90 cases, respectively, which are much lower than what is seen in the north and center of the state.

The sudden increase in the number of cases in Chennai and several other districts is attributed to the Koyambedu market, which emerged as a point of concern towards the end of April.
