The state Congress decided to withdraw the nomination of its second candidate, Raj Kishor Modi, for the elections to the State Legislative Council, which is scheduled for May 21.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis and blockade, the EC had postponed the electoral process for these nine seats.
Following this, Thackeray called Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging political conspiracy to “create political instability in the state” and sought the Prime Minister’s help to mitigate political instability amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The phone conversation between the two took place after Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders armed with a new cabinet recommendation to nominate Thackeray to the Legislative Council through the governor’s quota met with Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

Thackeray’s senior ministerial position was under threat, as if he did not become a council member before May 28, so as a non-member he would have to resign.
Earlier, after the old party announced its second candidate for the nine-seat May 21 election, Thackeray broadcast that the polls should be “unopposed.”
“(The President of Shiv Sena), Uddhav Thackeray, personally feels that the elections for the nine seats of the Legislative Council are conducted without opposition. He hopes that this is because he wants to dedicate most of his time to the ongoing fight against the coronavirus, “Sanjay Raut told reporters.
The 288-member Maharashtra Assembly forms the electoral college for elections, and a candidate needs 29 votes to win. Congress has 44 MLAs and the last day to submit nominations is May 11 with the nominations scrutinized on May 12 followed by the last document withdrawal date on May 14.
