The increase in positive Covid-19 cases in Odisha since last week continued unabated with 83 more people testing positive for the largest single-day increase on Sunday as migrant workers from Gujarat and other states pushed the state to become a critical point of coronavirus.
With 83 positive results, all of whom were migrant workers except one, the total number of positive cases in Odisha reached 377, more than double the 163 cases a week ago.
The sharpest increase came on the day the state reported its third death from Covid-19, after authorities said a 40-year-old man from the Ganjam district had returned from Surat on May 6 and was quarantined. at Dhunkapada grampanchayat and then died on May 8. had tested positive after his death.
The situation in Ganjam district, the epicenter of Covid-19, appears to be spiraling with 125 cases reported in less than a week. All 125 people who tested positive had returned from Surat. A seven-member team that includes the director of health services and WHO representatives, the Indian Council for Medical Research and the Regional Center for Medical Research is visiting Ganjam to assist the district administration in containment, surveillance and medical response. .

The other critical points of Covid-19 that have become a headache for the state government are the Jajpur district (60 cases), Balasore (42) and Bhadrak (31). Among the 377 who tested positive, 290 came from Surat and Bengal, the two largest sources of Covid-19 cases in Odisha, followed by 41 with Nizamuddin links.
So far infections have been reported in 21 of the 30 districts.
With migrants inflating positive Covid-19 cases in the state, officials were concerned that the cases could skyrocket in the next two weeks, as more than 4-5 lakh more immigrants are likely to arrive in Odisha.
So far, some 57,000 migrants have returned to Odisha from other states, of which Ganjam alone represented more than 32,000 returnees.
What has increased the concerns of the district administration is that people will be quarantined. Odisha Assembly Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro alleged Sunday that migrants escape from quarantine centers at night to be with family members, even when officials said those who violated quarantine rules would be arrested.
