New Delhi: Indian Army sources on Sunday (May 10) confirmed that there was a heated confrontation between Indian and Chinese soldiers in northern Sikkim a few days ago and that troops from both sides were injured.

Several staff members on both sides were injured while exchanging blows, official sources said, according to PTI, adding that the troops disconnected after a dialogue at the local level. “Troops solve these problems with each other according to established protocols. Such an incident occurred after a long time,” said a source. A total of 150 soldiers are known to have been involved in the clash, which reportedly took place a few days ago.

The sources said that the temporary and short-term confrontations occur due to the different perception of the border on both sides.

Earlier in the day, reports said clashes broke out between Indian and Chinese forces in the Naku La sector in northern Sikkim. The area has no road connectivity and is maintained by helicopter.

Sources told Zee Media that the clashes took place during regular patrolling of the forces of the two countries and that the matter has been resolved locally as of now.

Some reports claim that the fighting was so intense that soldiers on both sides were wounded. The Naku La sector is ahead of Muguthang and the area of the region was traditionally not prone to fighting between soldiers from the two countries.

Sources from the Indian army said that temporary and short-term confrontations take place between the troops of both countries, since the limit is not resolved. The sources added that such problems are mutually resolved by the troops according to established protocols and that the latest skirmish has occurred after a long time.

It was the first case of troops from both sides exchanging blows after a similar incident had taken place at Lake Pangong in Ladakh in August 2017. Indian and Chinese troops faced off in a 73-day clash in Doklam tri-nation. junction in 2017, which even raised fears of a war between the two neighbors.

The border dispute between India and China spans the current 3,488 km Line of Control, the de facto border between the two countries. China claims that Arunachal Pradesh is part of southern Tibet, while India disputes it.

Both sides have been asserting that, pending the final resolution of the boundary problem, it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas.
