Earthquake tremors in Delhi, 3.5 on the Richter scale

Delhi-NCR Earthquake: A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck Delhi on Sunday, the third in less than a month, according to the National Center for Seismology. Parts of New Delhi and its adjacent areas also felt tremors around 1.45 pm. No reports of property damage, news agency PTI reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was near Wazirpur in northeast Delhi, said JL Gautam, Chief (Operations) at NCS. The same location and nearby areas were the epicenter of the earthquakes of April 12 and 13 of magnitude 3.5 and 2.7, respectively, reported PTI. The earthquake occurred at a depth of five kilometers.

Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted, saying he was praying for the safety of the people.

On April 12, a similar 3.5-magnitude medium-intensity earthquake struck the national capital, and tremors were also felt in Noida and Ghaziabad. The tremors were felt for several seconds and many people ran out of their homes.

An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 hit the national capital in 2004. Another earthquake of magnitude 3.4 was registered in the city in 2001, according to official data.

The main earthquakes recorded near the national capital occurred in Bulandshahr of magnitude 6.7 on October 10, 1995 and in Mordabad of magnitude 5.8 on August 15, 1966. Both are in western Uttar Pradesh.
