The army confirmed on Sunday that there was a heated confrontation between Indian and Chinese soldiers in northern Sikkim on Saturday, injuring troops on both sides.
The army statement came one day when the Hindustan Times reported that dozens of Indian and Chinese soldiers were involved in a tense clash in Naku La in Sikkim and the fight left 11 soldiers wounded.
“The confrontation incident as mentioned in the article (HT) took place. The aggressive behavior of the two parties resulted in minor injuries to the troops, ”the statement said.
The army said there are “short-term and temporary clashes” between border guard troops, as the limits are not resolved. The statement said two sides were disconnected after dialogue and interaction at the local level. “The troops resolve these problems with each other according to established protocols,” the statement added.
Four Indian and seven Chinese soldiers were wounded during the clash involving about 150 soldiers.
The Asian giants have a long-standing border dispute that led to a war in 1962. The feverish dispute causes around 400 clashes each year along the Current Line of Control (LAC).
The confrontation in Naku La was not the first time that Indian and Chinese soldiers had fought each other with fists. In August 2017, Indian and Chinese soldiers threw stones at each other and also exchanged blows near Pangong Lake in Ladakh.
The clash near LAC exacerbated bilateral tensions as occurred at a time when the two neighbors were locked in a long clash on the disputed Doklam plateau near Sikkim.
The 73-day Doklam clash between India and China along the Sikkim border is likely to be the new normal, the Center for Joint War Studies (CENJOWS) said in 2017, presenting a strong case for building military capabilities “as China he respected strength. “
In an article titled Looking Beyond Doklam, CENJOWS, a group of experts created by the Ministry of Defense, said it was crucial for India to demonstrate strength, as peace along the disputed border will be under “constant and continuously “with an” increase in frequency, intensity and depth of (Chinese) transgressions leading to more and more confrontations. “
In Doklam, China accused India of trespassing and prevented its troops from building a road on the remote Himalayan plateau that both China and Bhutan claim. The confrontation ended with the withdrawal of troops from both armies.
