Karnataka witnessed the largest increase in Covid-19 cases in a single day with 53 people testing positive on Sunday, bringing the count to 847 and reporting one more death, increasing the number of deaths to 31.
Belagavi, with 22 cases, Bagalkote and Shivamogga with eight cases each, and Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada with seven, were the largest contributors to the account, the health department said.
This was the largest single-day peak in the state, a senior government official said.
Shivamogga is the home district of Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who had previously been in the green zone.
Of the eight Shivamogga cases, seven are from the Yediyurappa Assembly constituency, Shikaripura.
The other cases were reported in Kalaburugi (3), Bengaluru (3) and one in Chintamani in the Chikkaballapura and Davangere district.
Eight of the nine people affected in Shivamogga and who had returned from Ahmedabad were contacts of people infected with Tablighi Jamaat, sources with the district administration said.
The only reported death was that of a 56-year-old woman in the urban district of Bengaluru.
The woman, who died of severe acute respiratory illness (SARI), had been admitted to a private hospital on May 4 and transferred to another on May 6.
She died on May 7, and laboratory reports on May 9 confirmed that she had Covid-19, the department said.
