Velmurugan, a man in his 50s, left Tirunelveli in a car with his brother-in-law on Thursday, bound for Chennai. The entire trip was quite painful, as she was going to receive her daughter V. Kollammal, 29, who arrived from Dubai, along with the mortal remains of her husband L.M. Kumar.

“It is a long journey back and a difficult road ahead for us. I don’t know how to comfort her. It is heartbreaking for me to see these events unfold at this age of my life, ”he says. Both her daughter Kolammal and son-in-law Kumar lived in Dubai and were due to celebrate their third anniversary next month.

Kollammal was among the 358 Indian nationals who were brought to Chennai on the two repatriation flights from Dubai at 12:30 a.m. and 1.30 a.m., respectively, on Saturday. After completing the procedures at the airport, Kollammal and her father have gone to their hometown, with the remains of her husband.

The remaining passengers completed immigration procedures, gave swab samples to authorities, and then went to quarantine centers. All were given the option of quarantining in free government-organized accommodation or paying and staying in a hotel.

While about 230 passengers were taken to a university campus on the Vandalur-Kelambakkam highway, 102 chose to stay at a hotel in Periyamet, costing them 1,500 a day. The remaining 26 went to a luxury hotel in Guindy. All of these passengers were taken on a bus and will be quarantined for two weeks at these locations.

For Suganya Saravanan, 30, this return home was quite special and crucial, as she hopes to give birth soon. It was a rushed and last minute process: after receiving the mail from the Indian Embassy, her husband quickly booked tickets for her to return home. “It was a smooth process. From the staff at the Dubai and Chennai airports to the passengers, everyone helped me and didn’t even allow me to lift my luggage, “she says.

Flying this time was very different, since almost everyone was dressed in personal protective equipment, she says. “As soon as we got on the plane, they gave us a new set of gloves and masks. Food — a sandwich and cake — and water were already placed on each seat. The crew was fantastic and took special care of pregnant women, including me on the flight, “he adds. Now, after spending another two weeks here in quarantine, he will return to his hometown, Puducherry for delivery.
