West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday criticized accusations by Union Interior Minister Amit Shah that the state is not helping the Center bring migrant workers back and accused it of spreading lies and play politics in the midst of an epidemic.

“Amit Shah’s letter is full of blatant lies. Two trains have already arrived and eight more are expected to arrive in West Bengal in the next three days. In total, 80,000 people have been brought back using various means of transportation,” he said. TMC National Spokesperson and Rajya Sabha Member Derek O’Brien.

“Amit Shah just woke up from his 40-day sleep, but when you write a letter while still asleep, the person is wrong,” he said, adding that the Union’s interior minister was doing politics on the subject.

Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and TMC youth wing chief Abhishek Banerjee tweeted that Shah should apologize if he does not confirm the charges in his letter with facts.

Shah told Banerjee in a letter that West Bengal was committing an “injustice” to stranded Bengali migrant workers across the country by not allowing “shramik” (worker) trains running on the railways to reach the state.

In his communication, Shah also noted that the Center has facilitated more than 200,000 migrant workers to reach their homes and that West Bengal workers are eager to return.

O’Brien submitted a document showing two trains each from Punjab and Tamil Nadu and three from Karnataka are on the draft special train schedule starting May 8, and will reach seven districts of West Bengal with 12,714 passengers between the May 10 and 12. Another train is scheduled to arrive in the Malda district on May 10 with 1,721 passengers from Telangana.

“We have a seven-stage plan to bring migrants back. We are doing it in stages. We don’t announce a close without a hint of planning. We don’t want to bring migrant workers back without a proper plan, as we are considering all possible implications to find the best way to do it, “O’Brien said.

However, the opposition Congress held that the West Bengal government gave the green light to all eight trains only after receiving Shah’s letter.

“The prime minister gave eight more trains permission after Shah wrote to the state,” said Congress leader at Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who is a member of Berhampore’s parliament in West Bengal.

Chowdhury previously said that he had spoken with Shah and railway minister Piyush Goyal to ensure the safe return of migrant workers, but their efforts hit a snag due to West Bengal’s lack of interest.

O’Brien rubbed Chowdhury’s accusation and said: “Our government gave these trains permission before Shah’s letter, as is clear from the date in the document I submitted.”

Shah’s letter to the Prime Minister of West Bengal stated: “Migrants from West Bengal are also eager to get home. The central government is facilitating but we are not receiving the expected support from W.B. State Government, which does not allow trains to reach W.B. This is injustice to W.B. migrant workers This will create more difficulties for them. “
