A comment made by Kashmir Police Inspector General Vijay Kumar about the role of the CRPF in counterterrorism operations has sparked controversy among forces deployed in the valley, officials said Friday.
They said that IGP Kumar, during a meeting of the joint forces at the district police lines in Baramulla on April 29 chaired by DGP Dilbag Singh, reportedly commented that the paramilitary force is a masterpiece and that the actual operations are led by the Army, its elite unit Rashtriya Rifles (RR) with intelligence assistance generated by the state police.
Kumar, a 1997 Indian Police Service officer, is said to have said that the CRPF’s work in Kashmir operations has not been good and that he knows it better, as he himself had served in the paramilitary force in the deputation previously .
Authorities said senior CRPF officials present at the meeting did not take the comments kindly and then confronted Kumar for his “unpleasant” statements against his force.
Senior state police officials said the issue sparked controversy after a section of security force commanders said the comment aimed to create a gap between sister forces working against militancy and terrorism in the Valley of Cashmere.
As the issue refused to go away and senior CRPF commanders sought high-level intervention, the J&K police Kashmir area tweeted on Friday specifically praising the role of the country’s largest paramilitary force.
“#DGP J&K Shri Dilbagh Singh congratulated the role of #BSF, #CRPF, @SSB, #ITBP and #CISF deployed in the various tasks at J&K. Especially #CRPF has played an important role both in maintaining the # L&O (law and order) and #CI (counterinsurgency) networks, “he said.
