The Union Ministry of Health said Friday that people should “learn to live with the coronavirus.”

This came after the Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Randeep Guleria, said that India should prepare for a jump in cases, and that the model shows that the peak of infections can occur between June and July. In response to questions about the expected trajectory of the Covid-19 transmission curve, the health ministry said community support was needed to fight the virus and contain it.

“It is possible that with compliance with social distancing rules and aggressive containment, India will never reach the top,” said joint secretary of the Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal. “But as we talk about relaxation and the return of migrants, it is important that we learn to live with the virus and that we practice behavioral changes.”

The Ministry of Health also said that the Indian Council for Medical Research received approval from the National Ethics Committee to carry out the second phase of plasma therapy trials in 21 hospitals across the country. The medical procedure involves the transfusion of blood plasma from a Covid-19 patient who has recovered to another patient who is seriously ill.

Agarwal said the Center will soon provide a new list of districts that fall under the red, green and orange zones to states. The classification depends on the number of active cases and the doubling rate.

As of Saturday morning, India had 59,662 cases of the virus and 1,981 people have died from the virus so far.
