Thirty more Border Security Force personnel, including two posted at its Delhi headquarters, have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total infections to the force to 223, officials said on Friday.

The border surveillance force has the maximum number of confirmed cases of the disease among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), also known as paramilitary forces.

CAPFs currently have more than 500 active COVID-19 cases.

“Thirty new cases of COVID-19 (six from Delhi and 24 from Tripura) have been reported at different facilities. They are all under the best medical care available at AIIMS-Jhajjar and GB Pant Hospital, Agartala,” BSF spokesperson Shubhendu Bhardwaj he said in a statement.

Of Delhi’s six new cases, two were published at BSF headquarters in the national capital and four in other units in the city.

An additional floor has been closed at the force’s eight-story headquarters at the CGO complex on Lodhi Road, officials said.

Two other floors were sealed earlier, after staff from an additional chief executive officer (ADG) and a police chief posted to the personnel affairs wing tested positive for coronavirus, they said.

An assistant deputy official rank inspector, who also worked at the central office, had recently succumbed to the disease.

Officials expressed concern about the increasing number of COVID-19 cases at the forces’ headquarters, which operates with a reduced force.

The total number of cases in the BSF is now 223. Two jawans have recovered, while two have died.

Among the infected cases, more than 80 percent of the BSF troops of a company deployed in the Jamia and Chandni Mahal areas of the national capital have tested positive for the dreaded virus so far.

Of the 94 employees of that company, more than 75 have contracted the infection, said a senior official.

The other important cases are from a single Tripura-based BSF unit.

“All instructions and directions of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare are strictly followed. The frequencies of sanitation efforts in the workplace / barracks have been increased,” the spokesperson said.

“In addition to existing disinfection devices, water cannons are being used for rapid disinfection of buildings and establishments, and BSF staff are being repeatedly sensitized to strongly adhere to preventive measures,” he added.
