NEW DELHI: Concerned about the large number of people launching social distancing rules in the wind and shoving in liquor stores as soon as they opened after a long break, the Supreme Court On Friday, he suggested that the Center could consider possible home delivery or indirect liquor sales to avoid overcrowding.
Arguing for public interest litigation (PIL), petitioner G Natarajan and defender Sai Deepak told a bank headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan that a new liquor ban should be applied as experience showed that people were ready to risk their lives by violating the rules of social distancing.
He said the long lines before liquor sales, where people often fought each other to maintain their position, put public health at risk given the contagious nature of Covid-19.
He said liquor sales seemed few, given the large number of people who were coming down to buy alcohol at the time the stores opened. He asked the court to issue an order to the Interior Ministry to issue a clarification on the liquor sales guidelines.
The bank said it was unwilling to entertain PIL, but noted that to prevent people from infecting each other, the government could consider indirect liquor sales or home delivery.
