The Madras High Court on Friday ordered the closure of all TASMAC state liquor stores in Tamil Nadu and allowed only the online sale of spirits in the state.

The court found a violation of social distancing rules in stores and said that liquor is not an essential element and ordered the closure until May 17, when the closure imposed by the Center is supposed to end.

The Madras HC judges viewed the video of the TASMAC stores from the past 48 hours and agreed with the people who presented the case that the MHA guidelines have been violated and ordered the stores to be closed with immediate effect.

Opposition leader, president of DMK M.K. Stalin has been claiming that opening liquor stores would lead to a further increase in the spread of the coronavirus.

The state is said to have sold close to Rs 170 million of liquor since it opened its stores on Thursday.

With 600 newer cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours in the state, Tamil Nadu’s new coronavirus count rose to 6,009 today, Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar said. In addition, the death toll in the state reached 40.
